What is Cranial Osteopathy?

Also known as Osteopathy in the Cranial Field, and sometimes referred to as Cranio-sacral therapy, this modality of treatment is Osteopathy in its most gentle form.

Cranial Osteopathy works very gently but also very deeply with the person as a whole to treat various health conditions influenced by changes in the functioning and structure of the body. Cranial osteopaths are trained to feel a very subtle, rhythmical change that is present in all body tissues. This is called Involuntary Motion or the Cranial Rhythm. The movement is of very small amplitude therefore it takes practitioners with a very finely developed sense of touch to feel it.

Cranial Osteopathy works very gently but also very deeply with the person as a whole to treat various health conditions influenced by changes in the functioning and structure of the body.

Tension and strain in the body disrupts the quality of the cranial rhythm and practitioners compare what your cranial rhythm is doing through tissue feedback to what they consider ideal for you. This indicates what stresses and strains your body is under at present and what tension may be present as result of previous injury/illness.

Tension which remains held in the body can restrict its free movement, and gradually the body may find it more and more difficult to cope with accumulated stresses and symptoms may develop. Cranial Osteopathy also gives an insight into the overall balance of health of your body and what may be needed to achieve a better level of wellbeing.Cranial Osteopathy can work on a number of therapeutic levels from balancing and freeing joint movement through to optimal nervous system and metabolic function.

What Conditions can be Treated with Cranial Osteopathy?

It is a gentle yet extremely effective approach and may be used in a wide range of conditions for people of all ages, from birth to old age. It is also very appropriate for chronic problems that do not respond to more vigorous forms of manual therapy, and is appropriate for those people whose health is compromised and have low tolerance to treatment.

Cranial Osteopathy is also very effective with back pain, sports/joint injuries and headaches.
Our Osteopathic Practitioners have all undertaken post-graduate study in Cranial Osteopathy and have the training and experience required to deliver very accurate and effective treatment in this field.

All of our practitioners at Southside Osteopathic Clinic are fully qualified cranial osteopaths, so you know you’re in good hands.
