What is Cranial Osteopathy?

Also known as Osteopathy in the Cranial Field, and has been taught as Crania-Sacral therapy outside of Osteopathy. This is a treatment modality of Osteopathy in its most gentle form.

Cranial Osteopathy was first developed in the 1920’s by Osteopath William G. Sutherland after looking closely at the anatomy of the head.  Cranial Osteopathy works very gently but deeply with the person as a whole to release strain and improve function and blood circulation.  This can assist in the recovery of good health from compromised health that may be expressed as various health conditions influenced by changes in the functioning and structure of the body.

Cranial Osteopathy works very gently but also very deeply with the person as a whole to treat  health conditions influenced by changes in the functioning and structure of the body.

Tension and strain in the body disrupts the quality of the cranial rhythm and practitioners compare what your cranial rhythm is doing through tissue feedback to what they consider ideal for you. This indicates what stresses and strains your body is under at present and what tension may be present as result of previous injury/illness.

Tension which remains held in the body can restrict its free movement, and gradually the body may find it more and more difficult to cope with accumulated stresses and symptoms may develop. Cranial Osteopathy also gives an insight into the overall balance of health of your body and what may be needed to achieve a better level of wellbeing.Cranial Osteopathy can work on a number of therapeutic levels from balancing and freeing joint movement through to optimal nervous system and metabolic function.

What Conditions can be Treated with Cranial Osteopathy?

It is a gentle approach and may be used in a wide range of conditions for people of all ages, from birth to old age. It is also appropriate for people with chronic problems that do not respond to more vigorous forms of manual therapy, and is appropriate for those people whose health is compromised and have low tolerance to treatment.

Our Osteopathic Practitioners have all undertaken post-graduate study in Cranial Osteopathy and have the training and experience required to deliver treatment in this modality.

While there is some preliminary research into Cranial Osteopathy, there is still much clinical research that needs to be undertaken to show the effectiveness of the treatment approach to many of the conditions that are commonly treated.  So far this research has proved difficult as Cranial Osteopathy isn’t just a “technique” applied to a condition or a symptom.  It is a treatment approach applied to an individual person to improve physiological function and this is a challenge to comply with the current models of research study.
